The Evolution of Fluffy

The Evolution of Fluffy. No, not Sesshoumaru, but his fluffy thing. Whether you think it's a tail, a boa, the skin of some dead animal or demon, or simply part of his transformation, there's something...odd about it. It changes its size and shape throughout the series. What is it really? Whatever it is, it's growing... I've used pictures from the manga, straight from Rumiko herself, since the anime usually styles their Fluffy after her Fluffy.

From here out, I will refer to Sesshoumaru as Sesshoumaru and the thing in dispute as Fluffy. From volumes 2 and 7, I have tried to include two scans from each appearance, because it changes so rapidly here. From later volumes, there's a scan from every or every other chapter that he appears in. I scanned the images from books 2, 7, 13, 14, 16, 17, and 19 myself. So, I present...The Evolution of Fluffy.

Volume 2

Ch 4. Okay, here's Sesshoumaur's first (lit) appearance. Notice that Fluffy doesn't call attention to itself at this point, but just blends into the outfit. It's small, and the end doesn't seem to go past his feet.

Ch 4. A view of Fluffy from the side. Not that much difference, except that we can see that it kind of loops.

Ch 5. Still not that much of a difference.

Ch 5. Though it seems to be trying to take over Sesshoumaru's shoulder now.

Ch 6. Here Fluffy looks almost back to its original shape.

Ch 7 cover. But hello! It grows again!

Ch 7. Notice that Fluffy may now be close to dragging the ground, so it loops itself over Tenseiga's sheath.

Ch 7. And it's also suddenly a lot fluffier.

Ch 8. Not that great a shot, but it still seems pretty fluffy.

Ch 9. And here Fluffy is definitely puffing out, giving Sesshoumaru almost a perfect circle around his right side, which we will refer to from now on as the "body halo."

Ch 9. Sesshoumaru transforms. Who knows what the hell Fluffy is doing here.

Volume 7

Ch 1. Still pretty tame here, but is it getting longer?

Ch 1. Suddenly it's very, very fluffy.

Ch 2. Retains the same level of fluffiness.

Ch 2. But whoa! It lashes out an Inuyasha, and acutally strikes the sword out of his hand. Does Fluffy have a mind of its own, or does it listen to Sesshoumaru?

Ch 3. It's getting fluffier again, and perhaps longer?

Ch 3. Watch out, Sesshoumaru! It's taking over your shoulder!

Ch 4. Still getting fluffier.

Ch 4. And there's our body halo thing again.

Ch 5. Not only is it taking over his shoulder, it's taking over his back.

Ch 5. Sesshoumaru departs. Again, who knows what the hell Fluffy is doing here. No wonder the anime didn't draw this when it could get away with not doing it (they had him take off on a cloud).

Ch 6. There's the body halo.

Ch 6. Still very fluffy now, notice, almost as wide as Sesshoumaru is.
